Grant awarded for restoration of historic building in Darwen

A grant has been awarded towards the restoration of a historic building in Darwen as part of an initiative to enhance, improve and revitalise town centre properties.

The Darwen Town Centre Townscape Heritage Initiative comprises of a £2m Common Fund of property and environmental improvement grants provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Blackburn with Darwen Council.

A THI grant of £31,899, jointly funded by the two partners, has been awarded to Anderson Brookes, Legal and Financial Services, for 25 Bolton Road.

It will fund external works including stone cleaning, repairs to doors and windows, roof re-slating and a new shop front, which compliments the existing building. The grant will also fund interior works to bring vacant floor space back into use.

Works on the property have now started.

Adam Scott, strategic director of regeneration and environment, said: “Many historic building are in a poor state of repair and are losing their original character and appearance. Owners are encouraged to take advantage of the grants available to enhance and improve their buildings.”

Property owners in Railway Road, Bridge Street and Bolton Road, Darwen, are invited to apply for enhanced THI improvement grants.
