Councillor wants Darwen traders to match Harrogate

Councillor Alan Cottam now believes it is up to the traders to raise their game in Darwen following the councils move to relax parking restrictions in the town. He believes there is not enough on offer to attract shoppers and wants to see traders strive to equal what Harrogate offers it's visitors.

The council scrapped the proposed disc parking system following protests from market traders. The idea behind the system was to increase the car turnover rate but traders believed the system would only help to reduce town centre shoppers.

Instead free parking on the Market Street and Foundry Street car parks will now be extended to 3 hours in an attempt to boost trade but coun Alan Cottam is now asking traders to up their game and show the council that everyone is pulling in the same direction.

He told the Lancashire Telegraph "We have done our bit and brought the cars in. Now the shops have to look attractive to the customer."

"We want to match somewhere like Harrogate, which has a reputation for attracting visitors."

He admitted that his statements may be criticised by some existing traders but believes this is an opportunity for the town to move forward.
