Weekly bin collections are back!

The last 24,000 homes will receive their burgundy recycling bins by the end of October. This will mark the final phase of the new weekly collection arrangement.

Recycling levels in the borough reached a new record high last quarter with 41% of all rubbish being collected as recyclable waste. With all households on the same collection arrangements by November the borough hopes it can reach it's target of 50%.

The smaller burgundy bins, which will be collected every week, will be used for household rubbish and the existing grey bins will be used for recycling. The new set-up will make it easier for people to recycle and help the area meet it's 50% target.

In addition to recycling their waste people are being encouraged to save money by cutting down on the amount of food they waste. It is estimated that upto 1/3 of all the food we buy is thrown away! The council recently signed up to the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign to show people how small changes can dramatically reduce the amount of food you waste.

With the 'credit crunch' taking hold can you afford to carry on throwing an estimated £400 worth of food away each year? Feel free to share your own tips by leaving comments in our forum.
